Roman Chertovskikh graduated from the Chair of Numerical Mathematics of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. He defended his Ph.D. thesis in Applied Mathematics in 2010 at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto and at the International Institute of Earthquake Prediction Theory and Mathematical Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow. From 2010 to 2013 he was a research mathematician and numerical analyst at the Centre for Wind Energy and Atmospheric Flows, University of Porto. In 2013–2016 he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Department of Mathematics, Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA), where he co-advised a Master thesis. Currently, he is a Researcher at the Research Center for Systems and Technologies, Facultyof Engineering, University of Porto, working on optimization problems for distributed dynamical systems, related to hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic flows.

Associate Professor at the Department of Mathematics at ITA, he holds a Master's degree in Applied Computing from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) (1999), a PhD in Applied Computing from INPE (2003) with a research internship ("sandwich") at the Department of Physics at University of Adelaide (Australia), post-doctorate in Spatial Geophysics from INPE (2005) and post-doctorate in Spatial Geophysics from Cambridge University (UK, 2009). He works mainly on the following topics: numerical simulation of solar dynamo and space and astrophysical plasmas, applied non-linear dynamics, chaos in partial differential equations.
